Why Hawaii attracts more tourists than most countries

Tourists spent nearly $16 billion in Hawaii during 2016.

This represents more tourism revenue than Cambodia, Brazil and Costa Rica combined during the same year.

So what attracts visitors to Hawaii?

Why Hawaii attracts more tourists than most countries

To help us answer this question, we polled 890 people out of the more than 3 million people who take surveys on SurveyMonkey every day.

Here's what they had to say about visiting Aloha State:

Relaxation and natural beauty are the main attractions

Why Hawaii attracts more tourists than most countries

Famous for its active volcanoes, wildlife refuges, and active tall peaks, it's no wonder that 88% of respondents cited natural beauty as a reason to visit Hawaii.

Relaxing on the beach is the second most popular reason to visit. This is especially true among women and young adults between the ages of 18 and 29. 85% in each group cited this as a reason for their visit. The potential for water tanning appears to outweigh the activity.

Embracing culture is also at the top of the list

Participating in traditional Hawaiian culture and customs is another essential part of tourists' plans.

67% want to learn about culture by visiting the Holy Land and the same share want to explore "hidden gems" with a local expert.

The appetite to try local cuisine is strong, too. 65% of participants want to pair locally brewed beer with a poke and attend cooking classes. Is your mouth watering yet?

Being active is still on the agenda

Why Hawaii attracts more tourists than most countries

Engaging in active adventures is still popular, especially among young people.

  • 59% would like to dive in a remote area
  • 54% of all our respondents, 60% of young adults - 18-29 years old - and 49% of those aged 60 and over are interested in hiking
  • 44% hope to participate in water activities, including surfing and stand-up paddleboarding lessons

Whether it's contemplating beautiful sights, embracing Hawaiian culture, or doing more dynamic activities, the demand for a balanced, full-fledged Hawaiian itinerary is strong.

That's it for now, or as the Hawaiians say - "I am ka a pao no ka manawa."
