HONOLULU (KHON2) - According to a recent state survey, 67% of Hawaiians agreed that their island is "run for tourists at the expense of locals."
The new data is from the Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism Spring 2022 Resident Survey.

The survey showed early signs of boosting residents' morale toward tourism. There has also been support for renewable tourism efforts and destination management.
OAHU
- 36% said tourism was mostly positive for them and their families
- 66% agree that their island is run for tourists at the expense of the locals
Maui County
- 35% said tourism was mostly positive for them and their families
- 81% agree that their island is run for tourists at the expense of the locals
Kauai
- 34% said tourism was mostly positive for them and their families
- 75% agree that their island is run for tourists at the expense of the locals
Big Island
- 39% said tourism was mostly positive for them and their family
- 61% agree that their island is run for tourists at the expense of the locals
The highlights of the survey
- 92% of residents agreed that visitors should be educated about protecting Hawaii's natural environment and cultural resources
- 87% agreed on the importance of an authentic presentation of the Native Hawaiian language
- 77% said it was important to eliminate illegal vacation rentals on their island
- 73% support visitor entrance fees to state parks and trails
- 67% agreed that their island is "run for tourists at the expense of locals"
- 66% strongly support using tax dollars to manage the effects of tourism in their communities rather than promoting tourism in their communities (42%)
- 66% said it was important not to allow more hotels/apartments/timeshares to be built on their island
- 64% said it was important to stop agreeing to additional statutory vacation rentals
- 56% agreed that tourism helps fund stewardship of Hawaii's natural resources, parks, and cultural sites
- 54% agreed that tourism brings more benefits than problems
- 46% felt that more efforts are being made to balance the economic benefits of tourism and the quality of life of residents
- 43% agreed that tourism contributes to the perpetuation of the indigenous Hawaiian culture and language
- 41% said tourism is better managed on their island
- 36% felt tourism was mostly positive for them and their families
- 27% agreed with this statement: "I have a say in the decisions to develop tourism on my island."
- 27% were familiar with the concepts of “destination management” or “managed tourism”
