FDA expands monkeypox vaccine authorization to increase dose supply five-fold

  • The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will allow health care providers to administer the injection through intradermal injections, or between layers of skin for adults.

FDA expands monkeypox vaccine authorization to increase dose supply five-fold



On Tuesday, the US Food and Drug Administration expanded its license to the monkeypox vaccine in a way that would greatly enhance the limited supply of the injection.


The FDA will allow healthcare providers to administer the injections through intradermal injections, or between layers of the skin, which will increase the dose supply fivefold. This type of injection uses one fifth of the normal dose. Intradermal injection for adults only.




The emergency permit also allows people under the age of 18 to receive the vaccine if they are at risk of developing a monkeypox infection. People under 18 years of age get the injection by injection under the skin or under the skin.


Jynneos is the only monkeypox vaccine approved by the FDA in the United States, and the vaccines are given in two doses at 28-day intervals. Jynneos is manufactured by Bavarian Nordic, a biotechnology company based in Denmark.





The United States has struggled to keep up with the growing demand for the shots as the outbreak of monkeypox has increased, making it difficult for people to get appointments and leading to long queues outside clinics.


The United States is battling the world's largest outbreak of monkeypox with nearly 9,000 cases in 49 states, Washington DC and Puerto Rico, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.




Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra declared the outbreak a public health emergency last week. The United States last declared a public health emergency in response to Covid-19 in 2020.



HHS has made more than 1 million doses available to state and local health departments since May. More than 620,000 doses have been shipped to jurisdictions so far, according to HHS.
